Fullscreen, widescreen DVDs?

I was wondering if you buy a "fullscreen" DVD for your square shaped TV and then buy a widescreen TV, will the DVD still fill the entire screen of your new TV?

No.

On your new widescreen HDTV, if there is no zooming or cropping, and the image is displayed correctly, you will have black bars on the sides when you view full screen DVDs.

You can force any kind of DVD to fit any kind of TV, but you will either get distortion from stretching the image, or parts of the image will be chopped off, there is no way around this.

Since everything is going wide, and it has been since the late 90s, it's best to avoid full screen DVD. Even if you have a standard squarish type TV, you won't have it forever.
