Where is the dividing line between hard rock and heavy metal?
What specific thing(s) differentiate between the hard rock genre from the heavy metal genre?
I consider bands like Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, and Poison to be hard rock while I consider bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Megadeth to be heavy metal.
a lot of it i think is subject matter. look at the the darkness of metal. there are songs about fantasy, war, the devil, politics, murder, battle, etc. not all metal is dark but till Black Sabbath/Led Zeppelin there wasn't a lot, a few exceptions, but not a lot of bands really putting those dark messages into music. for the most part hard rock is about partying, lost loves, fast cars, pu**y, and that's fine. metal tends to delve in more esoteric subjects.
that's just my opinion.
