Should kids be banned from restaurants?
A Pennsylvania establishment tells its patrons to leave their children at home -- is it right?
Extended shrill shrieking from my 26-month-old - please help?
My 26-month-old has started to use extended periods of shrill shrieking (10 -20 minutes) to amuse herself and upset all around. I can manage her at home with time outs, but don't know what to do in the car or restaurants/supermarkets. I know a solution is to leave public places, but that is what she wants and when I do take her to the store (I usually shop when my husband is home) it is because it is essential. In the car I have withdrawn privileges: I warn her I will turn the car DVD off if she continues, but when I do it seems she has nothing to lose. So recently I added no books when we get home before nap time, but that doesn't work either. I have an infant so It is hard to ignore her high pitched schrieking as it wakes him up and makes him cry (she is further amused by this). HELP PLEASE
I have taught preschool (2- 3 yr olds) for 20 years and I also have an 8 year old daughter and a 7 year old son so I've had a few encounters with the screamers!! While it is a cry for attention..it also her testing her limits with you...believe it or not she's trying to see how far she can push you to react and then when you react negatively she is showing you that she knows how to upset you. What you need to do is "seperate" yourself from the screaming... if she screams when you're out then get a babysitter and leave her home... it will take a little while but she will learn that you wont give in and tolerate her behavior..trust me after a few times she'll ask to go and if you tell her she can go but ther's no screaming.. and she screams.. then guess what she doesn't go next time no negotiating!!! You are trying to negotiate with "things" with a 3 YEAR OLD... you are the adult.. right now it's what you say....negotiation is for when children are teens-early adults. Regain your home and your life...you are in charge not her. Also if she only screams around you.. then walk away and let Daddy handle it... if she learns that you're done tolerating her behavior she'll stop. You need to show her the right way to get attention...if she screams when you speak to her then whisper when you answer....introduce quiet time.. especially when your baby is sleeping...books,, video, music whatever works. Remember you're the Mom... you're the boss.
